5 Ways to Sell More to Existing Customers

With more and more consumers tightening their belts and cutting back on expenses, marketing has never been more difficult. The need to stay visible to customers has become more important so you are the first one they think of when they are ready to buy. Clever business owners that in times like this they need to focus more on existing customers. Because it’s much easier and affordable to market to them than to new customers, marketing to them has become more essential.

Unfortunately, not all entrepreneurs know the value of existing customers. Some still make the mistake of shelling out money on expensive ads only to end up with fewer sales in the end. If you want to stay profitable in a tough economy, here are tips to follow in marketing to existing customers:

1. Keep in touch. A simple hi can go a long way. This will help keep you on your customer’s radar. Instead of going for your competitors they will immediately think of you. You can do this through greeting cards, postcards, or occasional newsletters. Don’t be too aggressive though. Don’t send postcards every day. The key is to be as subtle as possible so you don’t displease your customers.
2. Provide loyalty programs. Give your loyal customers rewards or incentives. This doesn’t have to be huge and expensive. It simply has to be irresistible and something only loyal customers can avail. Promote it through your advertising rack cards, flyers, and sales sheet. Tell people about it so they will be encouraged to stay loyal to your business.
3. Set long term goals. Think not only of immediate results but long term sales and profits. Set up marketing programs that will entice customers to come back again and again. Offer deals that will encourage customers to return. It can be a free upgrade after a year. Profits may not be realized at once, but the customers will be encouraged to buy the other products you sell. Those who are impressed with your products will likely become customers for life.
4. Offer something extra. When customers are buying, motivate them to get something extra. This is common in some business enterprises these days. Take McDonalds as an example. When you order your meal, the cashier will offer you an upsized version of your drink or a dessert for an additional price. These are extras you probably want to eat together with your meal but was not on your original plan when went to the store.
5. Know the needs of your customers. Make an extra effort to familiarize yourself with the needs and wants of your customers. You can talk personally to them when they are in your store or use social media to engage prospects and know what products and services they need. You can also get rack cards printed with surveys and feedback forms. Simply ask the customers to send the forms to you. Never assume though that you know what your customers want. They have to be the ones to tell it to you.

Marketing to existing customers don’t have to cost a lot. If you know what their needs are and how to fulfill them, you should have a good number of returning customers in no time.
