Building Networks: What to Include and Not Include in your Network |
In business, networking is an important strategy. In order to gain valuable information, gain better exposure, and get ahead of the competition, a solid network is necessary. But quantity is not the name of the game in networking. It’s more about quality—the quality of people who cares for your business and will be willing to answer your phone call and act on your behalf. This can be family, friends, associates, and colleagues.
Like spider webs, the network should be huge to gain better opportunities. Simply keeping in touch with them regularly, say with postcards or large custom greeting cards, will help a lot in building good relationships. There are, however, people who should be included and not included in the list. With good research, the wrong crowd can be avoided while the appropriate people who will help bring the business to the next level will be included.
Who to include:
The established insiders. These are people or businesses that have been in the field for a long time. They are already experts in their field. It’s important to stay close to these people to gain the knowledge they already know. They can help determine where the company is has been and where it is headed. Also, their network of people will be beneficial in terms of spreading the network.
The informant. These are people who know almost everything in the industry whether it is technical details, trends, resources, and business strategies. With all the information available in the market, it’s important to sift through the real and the hearsay. The informant knows what information businesses need to know. Get to know these people and share knowledge and information with them.
The power networker. These are people who have connections in all areas. They will help connect people and businesses from each other. It’s important to connect with these people so the right connections will be made.
Who to avoid:
The user. People who only take and don’t give are called “users”. They will ask favors from businesses but never give back anything in return. When they are asked for help, they will make all kinds of excuses. Avoid this kind of people. Give them a dose of their own medicine and they will eventually leave you alone.
The backstabber. These are self-centered people who only want to see their business to succeed. They will try to praise a competitor and say only the good things to them, only that they are actually trying to mislead the entrepreneur. Beware of this kind of people. They are often difficult to spot but with good judgment and listening to what other people say will help point out a backstabber at once.
The problematic individuals. People with distasteful behavior should be avoided at all cost. They won’t bring anything good to the business. In fact, they will be the cause of the business’s downfall as their behavior will reflect poorly on the company.
With the right people around, networking success will be achieved easily. Use social media and traditional marketing strategies (color greeting cards, postcards, flyers, etc.) to find valuable contacts. Reach out and there will surely be a lot of people and businesses willing to be included in the network. Remember: know who to include and avoid to build a better network.
