Twitter best-branded winners are: CNN, @BreakingNews Apple, Google and Starbucks! |
Got one of those Linkedin notices today about a discussion on a group I follow there on Twitter. It read:
What Brands are most mentioned on Twitter? What brands do you think made the TOP TEN list and why? In my research, I found out it's not only the ones that are doing a good job. Sometimes its due to what they're not doing! Check out this blog and let me know your thoughts?. http://inventorspot.com
Interesting idea! He has a nice list started and it is hard to use the Twitter search to compile this data. Twitter search does not give you a number figure on results found. Here may be an interesting way to see which brands are most mentioned on Twitter, using an advanced Google Search and ONLY looking on the domain of twitter.com. Using some of the same ones that Ron had in his study and adding a few others, came up with some surprising results, which are:
TOP BRANDS ON TWITTER.COM CNN = 11,900,000 results from twitter.com BreakingNews = 10,500,000 results from twitter.com iPhone = 3,370,000 results from twitter.com Google = 2,890,000 results from twitter.com Starbucks = 2,830,000 results from twitter.com Mac = 981,000 results from twitter.com BBC = 754,000 results from twitter.com Apple = 730,000 results from twitter.com Windows = 500,000 results from twitter.com Amazon = 378,000 results from twitter.com Microsoft = 359,000 results from twitter.com Dell = 284,000 results from twitter.com Linux = 148,000 results from twitter.com Sony = 142,000 results from twitter.com Adobe = 101,000 results from twitter.com Nokia = 77,800 results from twitter.com Zune = 35,700 results from twitter.com Coca Cola = 31,500 results from twitter.com AIG = 27,800 results from twitter.com InDesign = 13,400 results from twitter.com Quark = 3,280 results from twitter.com
My take on this, besides being fun and useful to do, is that Apple is a big winner. Yes, CNN is way in front with actual returns, and they should be applauded for their huge effort in pushing Twitter live on their various shows (is that the old, "if you cannot beat them, join them" deal?), but with Apple, Mac, iPhone, etc all added up, gives their brand a very strong presence on Twitter.
On the CNN note, you'll notice @BreakingNews, which is a small operation out of Amsterdam, second in hits on Twitter! This is a "brand" albeit one that seems to have started and really thrived only via Twitter and provided fast and generally accurate breaking news summaries.
Google and Starbucks do well too. From Google it would be expected, after all they were rumored to be going to buy Twitter, right (Or was that Apple...)? Starbucks however puts in a great showing, as this is a perfect example of how online branding (Not only joining these social networks, but becoming part of them and participating.) can have huge advertising and awareness benefits.
Lastly, Adobe and InDesign CS put in a nice performance. (Check out this list of Adobe people to follow on Twitter, which we compiled some time back.)
Many more brands out there; look forward to your lists!
